San Cristóbal de La Laguna is just 10 minutes from Tenerife’s northern airport, and about 50 minutes away from Tenerife’s larger airport in the south.
How to Get to San Cristóbal de La Laguna
There is good public transport from both of Tenerife’s airports to San Cristóbal de La Laguna. Timetables of the bus company (Titsa) can be viewed here.
Renting a car is easy and is the best way to explore at your own pace. Taxis are also readily available from both airports.

How to Move Around In and Outside of San Cristóbal de La Laguna
All major attractions, and most hotels, bars and restaurants are found in San Cristóbal de La Laguna’s historic downtown center. The area is compact and made up of several flat pedestrian only streets, making walking the best way to get around the city.
The city is well connected to major points around the island via public transport, and the main bus station, the Intercambiador de La Laguna, is just a 15 minute walk from the historic downtown. There is also a tram line that travels between Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
Most visitors looking to explore outside of the city will rent a car. It is possible to forgo the car and use public transportation to get around, as long as you are patient and don’t mind skipping smaller mountain villages or other off the beaten track areas.
Taxis are available, but are best for shorter excursions.
When is the Best Time to Visit San Cristóbal de La Laguna?
San Cristóbal de La Laguna is a year round destination that depends more on what activities you have planned than anything else.
February – March: The city’s close neighbor, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, celebrates carnival during a two week period, sometime in the months of February and March. While the big open air street party stays in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, expect prices to jump up during this period as visitors look for nearby accommodation. During this time you can expect cooler weather in San Cristóbal de La Laguna as compared to surrounding cities and towns at a lower altitude.
April – May: Better overall temperatures, cheaper accommodation and a good moment to enjoy a wide range of activities from swimming to hiking.
June – July: Excellent weather and the busy start of the summer season. Expect sunny skies and warm days. The popular local celebration of La Romería de San Benito takes place on one day in July.
August: The height of summer. You may start to see shorter summer hours at museums and the tourist information center and some small businesses will start to shut down for one to two weeks of summer vacation. Remember that San Cristóbal de La Laguna has no beach access (although only 20 minutes away), and that hikers should be prepared for hot days if on exposed trails.
September – October: Less crowds, warm temperatures, and a great shoulder season moment to explore, hike and swim before the winter high season begins. One of the city’s most important religious celebrations, la Fiestas del Cristo, occurs in September with musical acts, parades and religious ceremonies.
November: Night time temperatures cool down, and you could start to see some cloudy days or moments of rain.
December – January: Winter high season. Weather can move between cloudy, sunny, and drizzly fairly easily. Night time temps on average are 11°C – 13°C (52°F – 55°F).
Should I Base Myself in San Cristóbal de La Laguna?

San Cristóbal de La Laguna is an excellent base for visitors planning to spend the majority of their time exploring the north of the island. It’s for people who prefer history and culture over bikinis and beach clubs, and those who look for charming and cozy hotels over all inclusive resorts.
If your idea of a holiday in Tenerife revolves primarily around the beach, you´ll be better off visiting San Cristóbal de La Laguna on a day trip, rather than making it your main base. The city has no direct beach access, and although several swimming spots can be reached by car or public transport, you´ll need about 20-30 minutes to get there. Additionally, those wanting consistent sunny weather above all else would be better off staying in the south of Tenerife, unless visiting in the summer.
How Long to Stay in San Cristóbal de La Laguna
A trip to San Cristóbal de La Laguna can easily be modified, depending on the time you have available to visit. A half day is fine to walk around, enjoy one of the city’s cozy cafés, or eat a meal. You can easily spend a full day visiting if you decide to go to a museum, visit a church or do some shopping.
If you plan to base yourself here, 3 – 4 days would be sufficient to see the surrounding sights, depending on how fast you move.
Where to Stay in San Cristóbal de La Laguna
The vast majority of the city’s main sights are concentrated around the downtown center, and this is where we recommend you book your accommodation. By booking in the downtown area, you´ll be able to access everything by foot. Two main plazas bookend the downtown area: Plaza del Adelantado and Plaza la Concepción. It takes about 10 minutes to walk between the two. The streets between the two plazas are pedestrian only, so if you book in the middle, you will need to move your luggage from wherever you park to your hotel. Thankfully, San Cristóbal de La Laguna’s downtown is compact, flat and easy to move around.
Plaza del Adelantado is closer to the main tourist information point and a shorter walking distance from the main bus station and the tram line in the event you plan to use public transport to move around the island.
